I booked this site early, hoping that my PhD project sampling dates wouldn’t fall over it and it somehow worked out. A little too well almost considering my animals had to get taken off their pastures nearly a month earlier than last year due to the lack of rain we’ve had over the summer in ON!
Due to my trial coming to a bit of a screeching halt, the days leading up to (and the starting day of this trip) were filled with sampling so my husband took the lead in planning this trip!
This park is in Port Severn area and VERY close to Honey Harbour, a place that I spent many weekends of my childhood in at a family friend’s cottage. The Georgian Bay area is always so beautiful to be in!
We camped Friday to Sunday ($98.57 for the two nights), our site, 54, was in the Poplar campground and was a non-electric walk in site. The walk in was not long but it was steep so book with caution if you have any mobility issues!
Friday
My morning started in coveralls collecting samples for my project… Yes that is cow poop!
While I was working my husband grocery shopped and packed for our camping trip! We have both camped so much and this two night trip is so short that we didn’t bother writing out a menu which seems to have been for the best considering how the weather got us on day two!

Once my work was done we hit the road around 1pm and arrived at the campground around 4pm. We stopped at Tin Roof Cafe (shocking I’m sure if you read my other posts about camping haha) and had BLTs for lunch and I had a matcha, delish!

I realized that I’d forgotten to pack a book (reading is one of the BEST camping activities) so Duncan and I took a detour into Midland to Georgian Bay Books where I purchased One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig. It has been on my TBR for so long and the shopkeeper recommended it so it was meant to be!
I was also listening to the Plated Prisoner series by Raven Kennedy on audiobook this weekend, I’ve been loving this series!
Duncan took the lead on tent set up (shout out Mum and Dad for this tent! It was a wedding present from them! It is a Eureka! Space Camp 6). The weather was so nice that we didn’t even put the fly on for the first night and just slept looking up through the mesh at the stars!
We roasted some sausages over the campfire for dinner and just spent the evening chillaxing, I fell asleep pretty early I was so tired from my week!

Saturday
No fly on the tent = wake up with the sunrise!
For breakfast I cooked us up some egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches while Duncan put the fly on the tent as the forecast was calling for some heavy rain later that day. It is also peach season so we’d packed some nice ripe ones we got at the farmer’s market last weekend.
Even though it was going to rain later we still set up the hammock and took turns reading in it for the morning!

After relaxing that morning we went to the beach for a swim. The Maple beach was only a 2 minute walk from our campsite and it has a really well maintained, sandy, swim square.

We made burgers over the fire for lunch before heading out for a guided nature hike!
Our last activity before the rain hit was a guided hike on the David Milne Trail with some of the park rangers.
I don’t usually partake in the scheduled events at the Provincial Parks but this hike showed me that I really should in the future!
We saw 12 turtles, 11 painted and one Blanding’s which the rangers told us is a rare sighting. They brought us binoculars and were so knowledgeable it was awesome!

The rain was coming in at the end of this hike so we decided to head into Honey Harbour for a fish and chip dinner at Fin City Fish & Chips. It is also a marina where people keep their boats so when the rain paused we went and wandered the docks to look at all the different boats.

Sunday
After an extremely rainy night we came out dry Sunday morning! We decided that mother nature was telling us to go out for breakfast so we just took down our wet campsite, packed up the van and went to Christie’s Mill for breakfast! We ate with a beautiful view of the lake and then hit the road home.

This was a nice relaxing weekend, nothing crazy! Just spent some time with my favourite boy 🙂
Cheers!
